Assessment & Taxes

Assessment

This is the process of placing a dollar value on a property in order to calculate the amount of taxes that will be charged on that property. In Alberta, properties are based on the market value of the property.

Innisfail assessment services are contracted out to Wildrose Assessment Services. Assessments are completed on properties in Innisfail by January of each year.

Tax

Town Council sets the residential and non-residential tax rates or "mill rates" in the spring of each year. These are based on the budgeted funds required to operate and maintain the municipality for that year, as well as the Provincial School Levy. The School Levy is the amount that will be collected by the Town and then paid directly to the Province of Alberta to maintain and develop the school system.

When determining property taxes, all municipalities are required, by law, to follow the guidelines contained in the Municipal Government Act.

What you end up paying for taxes is determined by a simple formula:
Assessment x Tax Rate = Property Taxes

The tax amount on your Assessment & Tax Notice is for taxes levied from January to December of the current year. All taxes are due and payable by June 30th.
